Project objective

Planned-shutdown refractory assessment for a cement rotary kiln, comprising lining condition inspection, repair scope definition, material planning, and restart checks.

Inspection methodology

The inspection programme was structured in two phases. Pre-shutdown, operating data was reviewed with the plant team: hot-spot locations, shell-temperature trends, and recurring patch areas. This established inspection priorities before the kiln cooled. During the outage, the lining was inspected zone by zone — residual thickness measurement, crack and open-joint documentation, and assessment of chemical attack and mechanical wear. All readings were recorded against a common layout drawing to allow direct comparison at subsequent outages.

Repair scope

Findings were classified into urgent repairs, planned replacements, and a monitoring list. Each work item was defined with:

  • demolition boundary
  • material specification
  • installation method
  • inspection hold points for sign-off before progression

Materials and equipment were staged according to the agreed sequence, and critical lining zones were re-inspected before the dry-out phase.

Quality control and restart

Dry-out and restart checks were agreed with the plant team before the unit returned to service. The resulting inspection record provides a baseline for future campaigns, enabling comparison-based lining decisions rather than ad-hoc assessment.
